It seems a bit inane to post this, a declaration of intent for the new direction of a blog which, at the moment, doesn't really have any readers to declare intent to. But, this is the internet, and shouting (speaking,typing,...) into the void is par for the course.
This morning the man who was tasked with installing an internet connection in my new house started chatting me up about what I do, and what I'm studying. I explained that I'm majoring in Graphic Design, and he followed up with the most terrifying booby-trap of a question, "What is graphic design?"
Well shit. Graphic design is everything, right? That's what they tell us in school, at least. Graphic Design, or as I like to think of it, the much more terrifyingly vague 'Design' is all around us. An omnipresent being responsible for our sense of direction, for our news and our entertainment. It's books and websites and logos and shopping bags and chairs and posters and cell phones. It's products, but it's also ideas. It's the point at which art and industry collide, producing either brilliance or bull shit. What I realized as I was rambling on is that I had no clear definition of what design is. Or more importantly what design is to me.
So that's what I'm setting out to do, to discover what design means to me. I don't expect to come anywhere near the end-goal, but the process alone seems valuable enough to try. I don't see myself as an expert of any sort, really a novice at best.
Let's get going then.
